Art I

This foundation course will begin with basic drawing and painting skills. Drawing skills will be learned by breaking objects down to basic shapes, studying light and shadow rendering, and griding techniques while doing still life and portrait drawing using a variety of materials. In painting, students will learn basic color theory, watercolor and tempera techniques. Using collage, students will study design graphics, color relationships, and use of positive and negative space. Each of the major periods of art history will be looked at as the year progresses.

Art II

In this intermediate course, students will build on the basics learned in Art I. Students will begin with advanced color theory and drawing techniques. Basic printing and carving skills will be developed through block printing and paper making. Students will study sculpture, learning plaster figure modeling, wire, and found objects. Through ceramics, students will learn various clay types, glazing and kiln firing. As students learn new skills, master artists of each technique will be studied.

Art III

This is a guided study of art offered to seniors. Students will work with the instructor to decide on a course of study they will pursue. Building on techniques and methods learned in earlier courses, students will build their own unique style. An important part of the art creating process of individual expression will be stressed, as students master technique and can put more effort into creativity. An in-depth study of artists and their styles will also be presented.

Portfolio Art

Intended for the student who wishes to pursue a career in art, work will be centered on development of a portfolio and preparing for the portfolio review and entrance interview. Students will contact schools to discover entrance and portfolio requirements. Each student will work to develop a portfolio of 10-15 pieces that showcase their unique style, individual vision, and creativity.

Music Appreciation and Theory

This course is designed to provide all the fundamental concepts of music, which include music theory, ear training, harmony, and rhythm and music history/appreciation. Students must participate in the class by singing in a group or playing an instrument. There is a concentration on both popular and sacred music. All students listen and are exposed to a variety of music. Through music appreciation, students will learn what they are hearing. Students will learn to identify different types and styles of music, how music affects responses and behavior, and how music expresses mood and feelings. Students will be able to recognize the components of music and different instruments and relate personal feelings to music. They will be able to join a choir to perform for school activities, liturgies and community events. An ensemble will be formed.

Family and Consumer Science

This is a course offered to seniors. Students will develop an interest in the importance of good nutrition, strengthen their decision-making skills in food choices, storage, and preparation of all types of foods. The course focuses on the study of the Food Pyramid and the recommended dietary allowances. Students will learn to balance healthy diets through educated food choices, how to cook healthy and the importance of maintaining fitness through nutrition. History, culture, and customs that influence the cuisine of other countries will also be studies. The highlights the study of the traditional foods of France, Italy, China, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Spain. The course also focuses on the development and stages of early childhood and the senior years. Students will learn to care for infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, and primary students. They will study geriatric care with visitation to local senior community centers. They will experience the aging process and the pros and cons of the "Golden Years". Senior fitness and nutrition will be covered, as well as senior ailments and conditions. Journals will be kept and research and field experience will be required.
