November 21, 2008
On November 11, 2008 the Marian chapter of the National Honor Society held the induction of new members. The National Honors Society was established in 1921 and is the nation's premier organization which recognizes outstanding high school students. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. The four main purposes that have guided chapters of the NHS from the beginning consist of creating enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulating a desire to render service, promotion of leadership,
and the development of character.
Prior to the induction of nine new members, the NHS at St. Mary High School consisted of 28 students. The current officers of the NHS are President Julie Chipko, Vice President Megan Jaron, Secretary Kelly Rennie, and Treasurer Brian Crockett. The new members are, Seniors: Ginette De la Rosa, Cynthia Garrigan, Dwight Hernandez, and Joseph Pianese
Juniors: Brandon Armstrong, Meghan Bohan, Thomas Halter, Catherine Makuch, and Ryan Sharkey
These young men and women, through their character have demonstrated commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service.
They will continue with the tradition at St. Mary H.S. to devote their time, talent, and treasure wherever needed. Some of the activities associated with the NHS are peer tutoring, food drives, Christmas gifts for Hudson Cradle (a nurturing residence for homeless infants), academic competitions, and blood drives.
