St. Mary baseball team earned the league championship this week in the Meadowlands B Division by knocking off Saddle Brook 9-1 on Thurs. They continued their hot hitting on Sat by beating a good Midland Park team 12-2 in 5 innings to improve their record to 16-8. The young Gaels will not play their 1st State game until Tues May 31st, due to earning the #1 seed in Parochial B North. They will have a 1st round bye and take on the winner of Dwight Englewood and St. Mary (jersey city). The coaches feel this team is very capable of making a run at the schools 1st State Championship in baseball since 1998.
Yesterday with St. Mary losing 7-3 in the 4th inning, Freshman relief pitcher Daniel Wagner came in to shut down the Weehawkin bats long enough for the Gaels to explode in the next 2 innings earning himself his 1st High School win. Wagner also got the game tying hit in the 5th to tie it at 7-7, as St. Mary went on to score 7 runs in that inning to earn a hard fought 12-9 win. Anthony Ferrentino came on for the save as he recorded the final 4 batters, all on strike outs. Senior Tom McPherson continues to stay hot with 3 hits, and 7 hits in the last 2 games. The Gaels are now 5-2 (3-0 league) and have won 4 straight.
On Wed, with the game tied at 3-3 in the 5th inning, the Gaels exploded in the 6th for 9 runs and a 16-4 win. Anthony Ferrentino, Bryan Cuevas, and Ryan Ferguson all homered in the inning setting a school record for Home Runs in an inning. Freshman Willie Kranjik pitched 5 strong innings to earn his 1st High School victory as the Gaels improved to 4-2.
On Sat Bryan Cuevas beat a Group 4 Hackensack team by throwing a complete game 3 hitter and striking out 6 batters. St. Mary was led by Kidane Rutty's Solo Home Run which was enough runs for Cuevas and the Gaels who went on to win 2-0 and improving to 3-2 on the year.

Junior shortstop Bryan Cuevas drilled a game winning 430 ft Home Run over the left fielders head to give St. Mary a 5-4 thrilling win in extra innings at Wallington. With a hostile crowd, the Gaels still fought back from being down twice in the game to tie it before Cuevas' Home Run gave them the lead and the much important conference win. St. Mary struck first with a towering 2 run Home Run from Junior Kidane Rutty, who was 2 for 2 on the day with 2 runs scored. The pitching of Senior Ryan Ferguson is what kept the Gaels in the game. He threw a complete a game, striking out 10 for his 1st victory of the season pushing the team's record to 2-2 (1-0 league). Saturday the Gaels take on a tough Group 4 Hackensack team at 11am at Tamblyn field. The team knows each and every game is important if they want to have any hopes for the prestigious Bergen County Tournament which every team needs a .650 winning percentage or better to qualify.
On wed the baseball team yet again was taking on a powerful and nationally ranked team in Don Bosco Prep. In front of a crowd of over 100 fans at Tamblyn field the Gaels were overpowered by the Ironmen 15-3. Once again they fell behind early 8-0 before they began to fight back and cut the lead to 8-3. St. Mary had threatened with bases loaded and nobody out and could not get the big hit to really put a scare into Bosco. The loss moves the Gaels to a 1-2 record, but with a huge league game friday at Wallington and home sat to Hackensack, the team knows they need to put 1st 3 games behind them.

With the opening of the 2011 baseball season this past saturday, our Gaels went out to Sparta to take on the highly profiled Pope John Lions who are ranked #2 in the state and nationally ranked. After falling behind in the 1st inning 5-0, the team rallied back in the 4th to cut the lead to 6-3 on a Ryan Ferguson bases loaded triple. The Gaels then threatened again in the 5th inning with 2 on and nobody out, before Pope John's Rutgers bound senior shut the door on 3 straight batters knocking the wind out of St. Mary. After a 2 out error in the bottom of 5th that led to 5 runs for the Lions, the game ended with a Gael loss 13-3. It was a great experience for our young team and we learned a lot from this game. On Monday April 3rd, the team was host to Eastern Christian. With a much needed win because of the upcoming tough schedule, the Gaels came out swinging. With a 6-0 lead after 2 innings, the team continued to hit the baseball scoring 8 runs in the 3rd. Overall the team pounded out 21 hits en route to a 19-0 win improving the Gaels to 1-1 record. Bryan Cuevas was the winning pitcher throwing 4 innings of 2 hit ball. The team will continue it's tough schedule when it host #4 ranked and also nationally ranked Don Bosco Prep on Wed April 6th at Tamblyn field. The team and whole staff could not be more excited for this game.
