The week of January 16 was an important one for St. Mary boys' basketball with two league games. On Tuesday, January 17 on the first game of the week, St. Mary traveled to Lyndhurst High School to take on the Golden Bears who were atop their division with a 7-2 record. Coming out of the gates fast, St. Mary jumped out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Their offense struggled however in the second quarter as foul trouble slowed down the scoring for both teams. At half time, the score was 21-10 in favor of St. Mary. Despite a short spurt in the 3rd quarter, St. Mary prevailed and won 37- 28 led by Johnson scoring 11 and Monaghan with 10. Their record improved to 8-2 with this victory. On Thursday, January 19, St. Mary hosted league opponent Secaucus. With a victory, St. Mary would assure themselves a spot in the Bergen County Jamboree. The outlook did not look good for the Gaels from the very beginning as Secaucus scored off the opening tip. Struggles on the offensive end again slowed down the Gaels as they were held to only 38 points in the entire game. With the 47-38 home loss, St. Mary was still in need of a victory to secure a berth in the Bergen County Jamboree.
