On Monday, the 26th, the boys’ soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Weehawken/Bogota by the score of 3-2 in overtime. With the New York City skyline in the background and on the best field in the whole league, the Gaels came out with their best performance of the season, especially in the 1st half. Man Sung scored midway through the 1st half to give the Gaels the lead off an assist from Yoon. Goalie Mark Novak played excellent as well as the defense, which allowed minimal opportunities for the Indians. The Gaels lengthened their lead to 2 goals minutes into the 2nd half on a breakaway goal by Min off an assist from Man Sung. However, the Indians really picked up their play in the last 35 minutes of the game, creating many scoring opportunities that they eventually began to put in the back of the net. The Gaels gave up 2 goals in the 2nd half to have the game tied and gave up a goal in the 1st overtime for the loss. Later in the week, the Gaels lost 3-0 to North Arlington and lost 4-1 to Becton, with Min scoring the lone goal for the Gaels.
10/16-10/23
On Friday, St. Mary played against defending State Champion Harrison and lost 7-0 in Harrison. Despite the score, the Gaels received a great effort from Luis Mejias, Evan O’Donnell, and Dave Capriola, who stepped in for a sick Mark Novak in goal. On Monday, the Gaels lost a heartbreaker to Lyndhurst 4-3 in double overtime. Although St. Mary was down 2-0 less than 15 minutes into the game, they continued to battle like they have done all year. Man Sung scored a goal off a feed from Joe Barilari and the game was 3-1 at halftime. Man Sung scored his 2nd goal of the game minutes into the 2nd half to bring the Gaels to within one goal. Midway through the 2nd half, Evan O’Donnell tied the game while Barilari picked up his 2nd assist of the game. The game would remain tied through regulation and the 1st overtime. Three minutes into the 2nd overtime, Lyndhurst was awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball call and converted to secure the victory. Goalie Mark Novak returned in goal and played extremely well in the 2nd half to allow the Gaels to come back in the game. Also, freshmen Kevin Garcia, Sebastian Dawidowski, and sophomores Javier Crespo and Eugene Stenyk played well as they have seen their playing time increase over the past few games. On Wednesday, St. Mary lost to Hasbrouck Heights 6-0 despite having numerous scoring opportunities and on Friday they lost 3-0 to Secaucus on a cold, bitter day in Rutherford.
2009 Season
The St. Mary boys’ soccer team did not have any games this week but are playing today, 4 oclock at Harrison (10-2). During the previous week, the boys’ played 2 games against division opponents North Arlington and Becton, losing both, 3-1 and 7-3 respectively. Despite not scoring a goal during the 1st 3 games of the year (Wallington, Harrison, and Lyndhurst), the Gaels have generated much more offense during the last 5 games, scoring a total of 7 goals. Sophomores Evan O’Donnell and Joe Barilari were in the middle of all the scoring during the 2 games last week. In the loss to North Arlington, Joe Barilari scored on a beautiful header off a free kick from O’Donnell late in the game to continue St. Mary streak of games with goals. In the game against Becton, with the wind whipping upwards of 50 miles per hour, the Gaels responded from a tough 1st half to score 3 goals in the second half narrow the margin against Becton. O’Donnell scored 1st on a penalty kick early in the half (2nd of the game, hit the crossbar in 1st half on P.K.). Minutes later, Joe Barilari scored off a free kick from about 30 yards out, and quickly thereafter, O’Donnell scored against off a rebound from a shot from Min. Other players who have contributed to the surging offense are Dave Capriola, Man-Sung, Young Choi, and Jack Montgomery. Additionally, the Gaels defense has been playing well of late, anchored by senior sweeper Dom Rose. On a side note, starting sophomore central midfielder Carlos Gaybor has been sidelined for the past 2 games with a sprained knee.

On a cold and rainy november afternoon Anthony Meluso pitches his way into the record books with 47 strike outs in a brilliant performance in front of 3800 fans.
