Girls Soccer Season Recap

November 10, 2010

The girls soccer team had highs and lows throughout the 2010 season. Under the leadership of captain Jessica Cruz and fellow senior classmate Andrea Sarracino, the girls had an exciting run this year, highlighted by their bid to play in the state tournament. The season got off to a great start with a 2-0 shutout against Weehawken, the first of 2 wins against this opponent. The Gaels then moved on to tie Immaculate Conception in a hard fought match of NJIC parochial school rivals. Later in the season, the Gaels would come back to beat Immaculate Conception 4-1 in a home match at Memorial Field. Another exciting moment came when the team defeated yet another Catholic school, Queen of Peace, making St. Mary the best small Catholic school in Bergen County for girls soccer. Disappointing, but hard fought losses came against former rivals including Lyndhurst, Secaucus, Hasbrouck Heights and Harrison. The Gaels also welcomed the competition of their new NJIC opponent, Saddle Brook; however, the Gaels were disappointed to lose against the Falcons. Nevertheless, the Gaels came out strong on October 8th to defeat long-time rival North Arlington 1-0. The Gaels ended their season in third place in the NJIC Meadowlands "B" division, an exciting accomplishment! Throughout the season, the team rallied behind the hard work of sophomore Alana Lopez who carried the defense and garnered 1st team All-League accolades, scoring 2 goals and having multiple assists from the sweeper position. Also at defense, Corinne Coppola, a fantastic marking back and high level player, earned Honorable Mention All-League recognition. The defense was supported with the outstanding efforts of the Mulrain sisters, Chelsea and Michaela, along with freshman goalkeeper Dana Russo, who stepped up big for the Gaels on many occasions. In the midfield, any spectator, coach or opponent could notice the tireless work ethic of Christine Sheridan. Sheridan knocked in an important goal against Immaculate Conception. Sheridan was a welcomed return to the team after coming off of an ACL injury. Also garnering First-Team All-League recognition was foward Amanda Millerferli who was the team leader in scoring as she scored or assisted all but 3 of the goals for the Gaels this year. There are a few other exciting moments for the Gaels that highlight individual accomplishments. One highlight was when Saddle Brook native, freshman Lauren Dadika, knocked in her first high school goal against Saddle Brook High School. Another fantastic moment came when goalie Dana Russo saved a penalty kick against Hawthorne. Finally, for the first time this year, three Gaels earned the distinct recognition of being given NJGSCA All-State recognition. The NJGSCA stands for New Jersey Girls Soccer Coaches Association and is comprised of coaches through the state who vote on players they saw as standouts on the field of contest this season. We are happy to announce that the following individuals will be honored on December 5th at a banquet in recognition of their All-State honor: Christine Sheridan, Amanda Millerferli and Alana Lopez. The Gaels look to build on the success they had on the field next year when they return 15 out of 17 players. A great addition to the staff this year came when Coach Sarah Volkomer jumped on board to help specifically with goalie training. Coach "V" was a high school First-Team All-American and is a valuable asset to the Geals coaching staff.

The St. Mary Gaels went 2-1 last week with two exciting wins against Weehawken and Immaculate Conception, and a disappointing loss against Lyndhurst. Last Wednesday the girls were back in action battling to come back from a 1-0 deficit against Weehawken. The Gaels broke through in the second half with the outstanding offensive effort of Amanda Millerferli who scored both the equalizer and the game winner. The final game of the week was a battle of the Parochial schools as St. Mary faced Immaculate Conception. After a scoreless first half the team came out on the attack in the second half, scoring 4 and conceding only one. The four goals were scored by four different players including Amanda Millerferli, Alana Lopez, Corinne Coppola and Christine Sheridan.

Columbus Day Weekend

October 12, 2010

The girls soccer team was back in action this Columbus Day weekend winning against rival North Arlington and falling short to Lyndhurst. The game against North Arlington demonstrated the ability of a young defense, with goalie Dana Russo leading her team to their second shut-out of the year in the 1-0 win. The goal came off a corner kick by Amanda Millerferli which was put away by sophomore Alana Lopez. Yesterday's game against Lyndhurst proved to be a battle. Lyndhurst broke through with a goal, with 20 minutes to play in the second half. They clinched the victory with a goal that ended the second half. With one win and one more loss the Gaels have a record of 3-6-1. Today they face Weehawken at home.

Girls Lose 1-0 to Secaucus

October 6, 2010

A stellar performance in goal by freshman Dana Russo was not enough as the Gaels fell short 1-0 in a game against a former BCSL rival, Secaucus. The Gaels had one excellent opportunity to equalize the score in the first half when Corinne Coppola's shot hit the cross bar. Despite the strong-willed effort of many of the Gaels, Secaucus proved to be a formidable opponent and came out with the win. The St. Mary girls soccer team will be back in action on Friday against North Arlington.
