Paul Johnsen ’98 takes over as Head Football Coach of SMHS

St. Mary High School Athletic Director, Dennis Hulse ’99, has appointed a new Head Coach of St. Mary High School football, Paul Johnsen Class of 1998, last week. “St. Mary High School is a unique school to coach at, and the opportunity to bring back one of our own who understands that, having both played and coached here, was too good of an opportunity to pass up,” said Hulse.

Coach Johnsen was a star RB/OLB and captained the ’97 team, which finished the season with a 9-2 record, including an upset win over heavily favored Montclair Immaculate Conception in the semi-finals of the State Playoffs. Johnsen later joined the Gael coaching staff under Head Coach Mike Sheridan and legendary coach Jack Jones.

“Believe. When you have a dream, continue to believe in God’s will and put it in his hands. This job is more than a dream come true; it’s what God has prepared me to do for the last 25 years, said Johnsen. With the help and support of everyone involve, SM will be the gold standard of what high school football should be. God, Family, Academics, Football and making young men great leaders.”
