Edward J. Ryan, Jr. ’75

Edward J. Ryan, Jr. began his career in finance at the property and casualty insurance company of Investors Insurance Group (IIG) in 1979. He achieved the position of Vice President/Controller responsible for managing all of the company’s accounting operations. During that time he was an integral part of several private placements, the purchase and sale of related business entities, as well as the eventual sale of IIG.

Ed established his own tax and accounting practice, and in 1992, it evolved into Ryan Financial. Ryan Financial provides Family Wealth Management and Tax Services to over 700 individuals and over 100 small businesses with three offices located in Rutherford, NJ; Union, NJ; and Middletown, NY.

Since 2010, Ed has been recognized as a top 75 Advisor at HD Vest with over 90 million in assets under management. He is an Enrolled Agent, a Registered Investment Advisor, securities licensed, as well as holding life, health, property and casualty and variable insurance licenses.

A graduate of St. Mary Class of 1975, Ed has spent the last 27 years lending his knowledge and expertise to his alma mater. In 1988 Ed became a member of the St. Mary High School Advisory Board and worked extensively with Principal Mary Lanni on the annual budgets until her retirement in 2000. Ed was instrumental in St. Mary’s fight for survival in the late 80s as the school was charged with reaching financial self-sufficiency from the parish by 1991 or face closing by the Archdiocese of Newark. During this tumultuous time St. Mary relied heavily on Ed and his credibility as he represented the high school in all financial dealings with the parish and its finance council.

In 2000, Ed was invited to join the Parish Finance Committee where he worked with the principals of both the Elementary and High School on the finances of the schools. In 2004, Ed was named a member of the Alumni Board of Directors where he continues to passionately work to ensure the long-term future of St. Mary High School.

Ed’s parents, Ed, Sr. and Gloria, past Distinguished Patrons, set the example for Ed of giving back to St. Mary when they were involved in the formation of the Fathers and Alumni Club in the 1970’s which raised monies to pay for St. Mary athletic programs.

In addition to his volunteerism, Ed is also a contributor. Together with his parents and brothers, John, Pete and Tim, all graduates of St. Mary, they established the Ryan Scholarship Fund which has been providing tuition assistance to St. Mary students since 1994.

A firm believer in St. Mary and Catholic education, Ed sees St. Mary as an institution where each student has the opportunity to learn and build a strong foundation for becoming a successful and caring adult. To this day, Ed continues to volunteer his time because he views the current mission of St. Mary as it was in the 1970s.

Ed resides in Rutherford, NJ along with his wife, Lisa. They are the proud parents of four grown children, Jennifer, Eddie, Joe and Matt who all attended St. Mary Elementary and High School. Ed is very active in his community serving as Trustee of the William Carlos William Center, a non-profit corporation for the Arts, the Rutherford Downtown Partnership, and Trustee for the New Jersey Society of Enrolled Agents.
