John Joseph Gillooly, Sr., 90, of Waretown, NJ, and formerly of Glen Rock, NJ, passed away on January 8, 2021, in Plymouth, MA, of complications from Parkinson’s disease.
Jack, as he was fondly known to family and friends, leaves behind his loving companion Joan McCarthy. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Joan McGillen Gillooly. He is survived by sons John Joseph, Jr., of Alexandria, VA; James of New London, CT; Brian of Raleigh, NC; and Bruce of Albany, OR; as well as their wives Elizabeth, Anne, Karla, and Monica, respectively. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, John Joseph, III (Sean), Katherine, Ryan, Michael, Colleen, Connor, Brendan, Mairaed, and Liam. He is survived by his loving sister Gail Clancy of Huntington, NY, and predeceased by sister Marilyn Andler and brother Edward Gillooly.
A graduate of St. Mary High School in Rutherford in 1948, Jack fondly recalled his days on the baseball and football fields and remained connected with his alma mater throughout his life as a long-time member of the alumni association, and he maintained important lifetime friendships with several of his classmates. In 2005, he was elected to the St. Mary Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation, he attended the Merchant Marine Academy, where he travelled the world in service to his country.
