Mission Statement

St. Mary High School’s tradition of commitment to Catholic education extends to students from Grade 9 through Grade 12. Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where excellent teaching and innovation develop effective communication, independent thinking, and creative problem solving for college and life experiences. We strive to instill in our students sound moral and spiritual values rooted in the teachings of Jesus, enabling them to live faith-filled lives in a culturally diverse world with respect for self and others.

School and Community

St. Mary High School, one of the oldest high schools in the state, is located in the beautiful suburban community of Rutherford, NJ.  The high school, founded in 1929 by the Dominican Sisters, is a comprehensive co-educational Catholic college preparatory secondary school that serves an ethnically and socially diverse student population.  Students who commute from a wide geographical area (over 50 communities) to attend the high school.  It may be the most easily accessible high school in Bergen County.  St. Mary High School has been recognized for meeting the academic, intellectual, social, emotional and athletic needs of its students.  The students are rigorously challenged by an intellectually creative faculty.

Admissions

St. Mary High School has long been recognized as a highly successful, comprehensive preparatory school. Students are accepted on the basis of the Archdiocesan Cooperative Exam, school records, and letters of recommendation.

Athletic Programs

Saint Mary High School is a member of the competitive North Jersey Interscholastic Conference. The school is legendary in the number of championships it has garnered. Many of its athletes have received scholarships to major colleges and universities over the years and have distinguished themselves by playing in a Super Bowl and by election to the Saint Mary High School Hall of Fame.

Faculty

The faculty and administration consist of twenty-three members. Twenty-eight percent possess advanced degrees. Saint Mary High School’s dedicated, professional staff is committed to providing a rigorous and expansive comprehensive academic program. In the classroom, teachers incorporate technology and instructional strategies that develop critical thinking skills, as well as content knowledge.

Campus Ministry

Saint Mary Campus Ministry program offers a multitude of ways for students to strengthen their spirituality through student ministry teams, immersion trips, all-school liturgies, liturgical leadership roles. Students also partake in a variety of service experiences including food drives and fundraising for community groups in need of help.

Student Activities

The student activity program provides leadership opportunities for over eighty percent of the student body. It includes Student Council, Key Club, St. Joseph’s Club, Mock Trial, and several culturally based organizations.

Curriculum

St. Mary High School offers a wide selection of courses in a traditional college preparatory curriculum. Courses are designed as College Prep, Honors, or Advanced Placement. The student’s placement is based on their previous academic performance, meeting prerequisite requirements, standardized test results, and individual course preference. The program is designed to prepare each student for future academic pursuits to promote individual responsibility and moral integrity. Students’ course selections usually exceed the number of semester units required for graduation.

Honors/Advanced Placement Courses

St. Mary High School provides students the opportunity to enroll in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. All students enrolled in an AP course are required to take the AP examination in May.

Project Forward

St. Mary High School, in partnership with Felician University, is proud to offer the Project Forward program to upperclassmen. Project Forward challenges students with collegiate academics taught by collegiate professors on campus after the school day ends at Saint Mary High School. The program allows students to experience college life, enhances students’ preparation for higher education, and awards students college credits upon successful completion of a course. Saint Mary High School students interested in Project Forward must maintain an acceptable grade point average, disciplinary record, and be cleared to participate in Project Forward by the Dean of Students.
